Stargazer Quilt with Dreamer Fabrics

So here comes the tutorial for the Stargazer Quilt made from Carrie Bloomstons "Dreamer Collection" :-)
A few more photos of the quilt can be found here.

Hier kommt die Anleitung für den Stargazer Quilt, den ich aus Carrie Bloomstons "Dreamer Collection" gemacht habe :-)
In einem früheren Blog Post gibt es mehr Fotos davon.

Those beautiful fabrics are already availale in US stores (we have to wait a few more weeks).
Like the quilt I made for Carrie last year with "Story Collection", the Stargazer Quilt is made with 60 degree angles and with the help of Jaybird Quilts "Hex N More" and "Super Sidekick" rulers.

My tutorial is basically about how to construct the trianlge pieces of the quilt.
Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts has great tutorials about cutting and piecing 60 degree angles on her blog (klick here) !
After every step always carefully press the seams open and cut off the "dog ears".
Are you familir with the Hex N More Ruler? Than it should just be fun for you, piecing the Stargazer Quilt! :-)

size: about 60 x 60"

Material needed:
background fabric: 4 yard
yellow: 42572-7 : 1 yard
bees: 42568-5: 1/3 yard
crosses magenta: 42573-6: 1/4 yard
crosses red: 42573-9: 1/4 yard
pink arrows: 42574-8: 1/4 yard
blue: 42572-1: 1/4 yard
multi: 42575-x: 1/8 yard

Sew:
stars:
from the yellow fabric
to have the stipe pattern of the fabric in the direction show,,
allign the 30° mark of your ruler to the selvage and cut off about 3 inches of the fabric endge.
Use this cutting line for a start to cut your strips.

Cut about 6 strips of 2,5 inch
with the Super Sidekick Ruler cut 108 diamonds
from the background fabric:
cut 10 strips  2,5"
with the Hex N More Ruler cut 216 triangles

Sew one triangle to the left corner of a diamond.
Press seams open.
Sew another triangle to the other side (of the sharp corner) of the diamond.

Make 108 of those units

Sew together two of those units to make 36 pairs.
And join one more piece to make the half of a star.

Sew together two of those to make 18 stars.

From the background fabric cut 12 rectangles 1,5 x 5,5"
Sew those rectangle to one side of 12 of your stars.

Align the Hex N More Ruler to the right side of your star unit and trim off the excess fabric

Flip the star over to the wrong side and trim the other side.

From the background fabric cut strips 2,5"
With the Hex N More Ruler cut 12 Half Hexagons using the 4 1/2" marking lines

Sew the Half Hexagons to the opposite side of the strips you just sewed on.

for star units 1:
From the background fabric cut strips 6,5"
With the Super Sidekick Ruler cut 12 triangles (big triangles)
From the background fabric cut strips 5,5"
With the Super Sidekick Ruler cut 12 triangles (small triangles)

for star unit 1a:
Place the star unit with the wide strip (half hexagon) facing upwards (blue arrow) and the narrow strip facing downwards.
Sew one big triangle to the upper left corner and one small triangle to the lower right corner of your star unit.

for star unit 1b:
Place the star unit with the wide strip facing upwards (blue arrow) and the narrow strip facing downswards.
Sew one big triangle to the upper right corner and one small triangle to the lower left corner of your star unit.
Set aside.

for star units 2:
From the background fabric cut strips 4,5".
With the Super Sidekick Ruler cut 18 triangles.
From 6 of those triangles cut off one tip at 3,5" like shown in the picture.

Sew the long sides of those triangles to one side of the 6 remaining star units.

Sew two of the untrimmed triangles to the star unit as shown in the picture.

-> star unit 2

Assemble your star units like this:
1a - 2 - 1b

Set aside.

Hexagon border:
From the background fabric cut: 3 strips 1,5"
With the Hex N More Ruler subcut into 96 triangles.
From the bees fabric cut: 3 strips 2,5"
With the Hex N More Ruler subcut into 48 hexagons.

Sew two triangles to two opposite sides of the haxagon.
Make 42 of this units A.

Sew two triangles to two upper sides of the hexagon.
Make 6 of those units B.

Sew together 7 of the A units to a row.
Attach a B unit to the right end of the row.
Aake 6 of those rows.
Set aside.

Triangle Row:
From the magenta crosses fabric cut 2 strips 2,5"
With the Hex N More Ruler subcut into 42 triangles.
From the red crosses fabric cut 2 strips 2,5"
With the Hex N More Ruler subcut into 36 triangles.

Sew the triangles together to rows, starting and ending with a magenta triangle.
Make 6 of those rows.
Set aside.

Jewel row:
From the background fabric cut 2 strips 1,5"
With the Hex N More Ruler subcut into 36 triangles (= small triangles).
From the background fabric cut 2 strips 2,5"
With the Hex N More Ruler subcut into 24 triangles (= large trianlges).
From the pink fabric cut 6 strips 1,5" (I did fussy cutting - the arrows in the middle of the strip).
With the Hex N More Ruler subcut into 30 jewels.

Sew 30 of the small triangles to the upper left corner of the diamonds.
Sew the large triangles to the opposite side of 24 of the diamonds (A units).
Sew the remaining 6 small triangles to the upper right corner of the remaining 6 diamonds (B units).

Sew 4 of the A units together to a row.
Align a B unit to the right end of the row.
Make 6 of those rows.
Set aside.

Diamond row:
From the background fabric cut 3 strips 1,5"
With the Hex N More Ruler subcut into 72 triangles.
From the blue fabric start cutting strips as you did for the yellow fabric.
Cut 2 strips 1,5"
With the Super Sidekick Ruler subcut into 36 diamonds.

Sew 36 of the triangles to the upper left corner of the diamonds.
Sew 30 of the trianlges to the opposite side of 30 triangles ( unit A).
Sew the six remaining trianlges to the upper right side of the remaining 6 triangles (unit B).

Sew 5 A units together to a row.
Align the B unit to the right end of the row.
Make 6 of those rows.
Set aside.

Middle:
For the very middle I sewed together some leftover strips to get one strip 4,5" high and 30" long
With the Hex N More Ruler subcut into 12 triangles 4,5"
Use every other of those triangles (wich look the same).
Set aside.

Now join all the rows together to make 6 large traingles:
Sew the hexagon row to the star unit.

From the background fabric cut 1,5" strips .
Sew the strip to the hexagon row.
With your Super Sidekick Ruler trim the edges.

Join the triangle row.

Sew on a background strip, trim
and join the jewel row.

Sew on a background strip, trim
and join the diamond row.

Sew on a background strip, trim
and join the triangle for the very middle!
Yay!
Now you can sew together your large triangles to make a large hexagon.

From the background fabric cut 2 rectangles (half the lenght x half the width of the hexagon plus 3 inches) layer them right sides together, cut in half diagonally and sew them to your hexagon to make the quilt a rectangle.
Quilt and bind and be proud of your work :-)

This ist just a basic tutorial.
You should be familiar with how to use the Jaybirdquilt rulers and how to sew together 60° units to make this quilt.
I am sure your local quilt shop and Julies tutorials will be a great help for you :-)
Have fun making this quilt and other beautiful things with Carries "Dreamer Collection" !
